Turnout Tips

Showing on the line provides young horses with invaluable experience. It is also a great opportunity to showcase what stallions and exceptional dam lines are producing.

There is more to line classes than just looking pretty, but great turnout for both the horse and handler shows the judge and fellow competitors respect.

This video provides some great tips you may want to consider when showing your horse on the line. Also, check out our Ring Etiquette guide below for more information.

Drug testing can be requested of any horse in any class

Only one person can handle a horse throughout an entire class. For example, one person cannot jog the horse and another present it to the judge during the same class.

Please help us keep up CSHA standards by bringing your horses out well mannered, braided and impeccably turned out. Juniors 18 years and under are to wear an approved ASTM/SEI-approved equestrian safety helmet.

A short crop (30 inches in length max.) is allowed in the ring. No toys, lighters, clickers, puffers etc., are allowed in the ring.

Use clean, well-fitted leather halters for foals, and appropriate bridles with snaffle bits for yearlings and up. Reins or leather lead shanks with split chains may be used. No chains over the nose are permitted. Single chains are permitted but must be looped through both sides of the bit and clipped back onto itself.

Dress neatly and conservatively in business casual attire (absolutely no jeans or track suits, please). This may include polo shirts, dress shirts, blazers, dress slacks etc. Handlers may also wear riding attire. The recommended footwear includes field, dress or paddock boots, dark running shoes or flat soled shoes.

Stay focused even when your horse isn’t actively being judged as horses can get loose or kick out when jogging. Unruly horses may be excused from the ring at the request of the judge or ring steward. Please exhibit good sportsmanship and respect for others in the ring.

Follow the ring steward's directions. Please be prepared to enter the ring at a walk when your class is called. Do not speak to the judge unless the judge initiates the conversation. When in the ring, do not hold up the movement around the ring by conversing with other competitors and spectators.
